GPS-Based Altimeters

For a full discussion of handheld GPS units and how the Global Positioning System works, see chapter 6.

The number of smartphone applications that provide elevation information based on your GPS location data is stunning. There are also barometer apps; however, these are not to be confused with actual barometric altimeters. The current generation of smartphones does not have barometric instrumentation. Instead, these apps work by using your GPS location and displaying air pressure data pulled from the Internet. Without the Internet connection (Wifi, 3G, 4G LTE, or EDGE), these apps cannot display your elevation accurately. So today in 2013, no cellular service means no working altimeter on your smartphone. Nonetheless, for those whose dayhikes or even camping trips will involve visiting one of the increasing number of wilderness areas where reliable cell service is available, there is no need to purchase another gadget. Additionally, industry analysts are saying that some next-generation smartphones will have real barometric altimeters.
